Bellcaire d'Empordà is a municipality in the Baix Empordà region located near the neighboring Alt Empordà region. Its geographical location is characterized, like most of the towns in the Empordà plain, by being located on a small peak.
On this peak we find the old palace-castle of the Counts of Empúries, which dates from the 13th century and served as a shield and defense in medieval times. At that time, the counts of Empúries dominated the surrounding lands: Torroella de Montgrí and Albons. This castle was declared a National-Historic Monument by the Generalitat de Catalunya.
In the northern part of the town there was a lagoon that was dried up in the middle of the 18th century, so that it could be used as farmland. This was already an evident sign of what the future of the population would be like: agricultural.
This, the improvements in this field and the arrival of Occitans from France due to religious persecution led to a considerable increase in the population that has been increasing in a positive way. Although, Bellcaire d'Empordà has never ceased to be a charming and small town at the same time.
For this reason, in this small town we can also find the church of Sant Joan de Bellcaire, which is characterized by the diversity of periods and styles in which it was built: Paleo-Christian, pre-Romanesque, Romanesque and Gothic.
In addition, we cannot forget one of the most characteristic elements of the town: the Rec de Molí. Currently, this waterway is used to supply the farmers in the area on their farmland, but in the past it was basically used to move the mills in the area and, specifically, the one in Bellcaire.
